ContiTech acquires hose factory in Turkey

11 April 2013

The Continental Group is again expanding its industrial business in a targeted way: the ContiTech division is investing several million euros in a hose factory in Çerkezköy, Turkey. From mid-year, excavator and coupling hoses and large-diameter pipes for the mining industry will be produced there.

The expansion plans are part of Continental’s strategy and serve to reduce the company’s dependence on the automotive industry for original equipment.  ContiTech is acquiring land and equipment from a Turkish company that has so far produced marine hoses for unloading ships. “Because of the significant increase in demand, we are investing in additional production capacity,” said Matthias Schönberg, Head of ContiTech Fluid Technology.

As a result, the existing plants in Grimsby, United Kingdom and in Szeged, Hungary will be partly freed up. In addition, ContiTech now  aims to focus its sales on the Turkic states of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. Customers there will benefit from short distances, better logistics and more local services.

From the second half of the year, more than 1,000 large-diameter hoses will be produced in Çerkezköy on more than 5,000 square metres of production space, in three shifts. Until now the segment has been driving the Oil & Marine plants and engineering offices in England, Hungary, the USA and Germany. In spring, construction of a new production facility begins in the Brazilian city of  Macaé.  In addition, a sales and service office has been set up in Dubai, which from the second quarter of this year will be developed for hose installation.
